Back on the 24th of December 2011 I purchased myself a portable air conditioner. I purchased a model that would also heat as well as cool. It was a lovely unit, cooled down the living room in Summer and did a good job of it. Now that Summer is well and truely over with and we're now getting rather cold nights and mornings I decided to start up the air con and warm the place up. After a couple of nights I thought to myself, this thing just isn't warming the room up. I had the unit set on 27 but it just didn't seem to be blowing warm or hot air. So I got a unit from a friend to see how it goes just in case these portable units just don't warm up like the units you mount in your house wall. Well this other unit warmed up the room and I didn't need to set it higher than 20 for it to do this.

So I jumped onto the net and contacted the company that makes the unit I purchased. And this is when the poor service comes into the picture. All I got was being put on hold, transferred to someone else because the person I was put through to couldn't help or didn't work in that area. This went on for over 20 minutes, after which time I gave up. I desided to contact the shop where I purchased the unit from. They got back to me saying they will chase up their sales rep about it. After a couple of days the store rang me and asked if I had any luck as yet and I told them no. They informed me they have not heard a thing from their rep and they tried him a number of times.

So tomorrow I'm heading over to Mildura with the unit. The store told me to bring it into them complete with everything including things liek the manual. I'm not totally sure what they are going to do but they said to me they're going to fix the problem for me. I have an idea they're going to replace the unit with another one but I don't know for sure. I will find this out when I get there.

The unit I purchased was a Omega Altise Airpod, model number APOD14. I purchased it from Retravision in Mildura. Now I must say, Retravision have been great so far. They have done a lot more than Omega has. In fact Omega have been very poor.

There are times when you buy a product, it fails and the company goes above and beyond to fix the problem and then there are those other products you buy, it fails and the company is totally useless to deal with and you have nothing but problems with them. This is one of those products. Almost like the issue I had with Tomtom over my GPS unit. Then again sometimes you just need to find the right person that gets off their backside and fixes the problem instead of passing and transferring you to everyone but the right person.

You can drive between Balranald and Swan Hill on any day and driving at the posted speed limit of 100kph you get people passing you and most of the time they're not just passing you and they are flying passed you. What makes it worse is some of these people should know better but they know the local police don't patrol the roads in question. If you report the problems your only told there isn't much traffic on them and therefore doesn't pay for us to sit on these roads. it's even worse on days when the local football team is playing elsewhere. You have parents driving their yound kids to football and they are driving well above the speed limit. You never see police out on these roads and it gets worse when you look at how many drive home after the football, with their young kids in the car, after drinking at the football. Again you ask where the police are and they're nowhere, not even hiding in the bushes, nowhere.

Today I was driving to Mildura and I had a car fly passed me doing at least 150kph in a 110kph zone. You report it to the police but nothing happens. In fact they get the report wrong. This has happened many times and I've even had big B-double trucks pass me while I'm doing 110kph. I thought trucks were speed limited?? You can be sitting on the posted speed limit and you have trucks sitting up your backside.

We need speed cameras on the roads out here. Now I'm not a great fan of speed cameras but we never see them out here and we really need one out here. They would make a packet and seeing they don't seem to want to have police on the roads at the right times I really can't see them bring a speed camera and or an unmakred car into the area.

It's doesn't take someone to go to UNI to workout out how to fix the problems. The road toll is up and will continue to go up until someone in the Government wakes up and works out that having police seen on the roads instead of sitting behind trees and that would make people think twice about being idiots on our roads. "P" plate drivers should loose their licence if they are caught hooning. If they are caught speeding more than 45kph above the speed limit they loose their cars for good, not a month but for good. If they kill someone because of them hooning and it's their fault they should be banned from driving for life. If the damage other peoples property they should be made to pay for it plus loose their licence and their cars straight away. If they run from the sceen they loose their car for good and their licence is lost for 2 years. This hopefully will make them wake up. Hit them where it hurts, in their pockets. If they don't have any money then it's put on their record and once they start working or are on Government payments they loose "X" amount to pay for what they did. They keep paying until they have paid back every cent. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

If they are caught the three time their cars should be CRUSHED regardless of the value or the car and the owner should be made to push the button. If they hoon in a company car to bad. It's time companies that supply employees with cars needs to make sure the cars are not misused. If a person is caught hooning in a company vehicle then the company looses their car. It's time we need a Government with the balls to deal with this hooning problem head on. It's time for the police to be given greater powers to deal with such people. It's getting to the stage where our roads are becoming a no go zone.

Small towns like mine are getting to the stage that you don't drive or have your car parked on the streets. We've had a number of young people driving around like idiots crashing their cars and damaging other people's property. It's time for these people to be taken off the roads before someone like myself has to cut them out of their cars or worse still, having to dig a hole to put them in it. Because one day it's going to happen and I'm not looking forward to that day. Like I said, this madness has to be stopped. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

My Pet Hates

There is just a few things I hate. Things that just get me mad. So here is a list in no real order.

Poor customer. I hate it when companies and or businesses don't give their customers either service in their shops or after you purchase products from them.

Don't reply to emails. This is a new one. When a company or business has a website and when you either use an online form or have an email address to contact them and you never hear back from them or if you do it's days later. If I'm contacting you I want an answer ASAP, not days later. I also find this seems to be an issue for private emails sent. You send an email to someone asking for either information or help and you NEVER hear back from them. When you do finally hear back it's only after you send them another email asking why they never got back to you. The normal reply is, "I never received your first email". Now I know this can happen but I think it's just a way of that person getting out of not getting back to you.

I've got to the stage if I don't hear back from someone I won't bother with them. If your a business you've lost my business and you won't get it again, it's lost forever. If your not a business your just telling me your not interested in the small person. I'm finding this to be a common thing these days.

So people, if someone emails or contacted you get back to them. You never know, it might be worth something to you. Plus I find it VERY RUDE.

Tomtom GPS

It's been a while since my last post. All i can say is i lead a boring life so there's normally not much to say, but this changed last month. So here is what's happened.

Back in March I contacted Tomtom about my GO 1050 GPS unit. Now before telling you what's happened with that I need to say how I came across having my current model. When I purchased a new car last July I decided to buy myself a new GPS unit for it. One with I bigger screen than the one I had at the time, a ONE XL. I got myself a new Tomtom unit as I was very happy with my old so I went into the local Dick Smith in Swan Hill and got a GO 1000, it was on special at the time and it had a nice big screen. Anyhow after about a month it started to play up. At first it would just time itself off and then it ended up with a major firmware fault. So off to the place I purchased it from and put it in for repair. In fact I was hoping they would just replace it but we're talking about Dick Smith here. I also found out that they don't send off repairs straight away, they wait until they get a few repairs first and send them all off at the same time. I was not happy. After about a month I got my GPS back, Tomtom replaced it with a GO 1050 World model. So I ended up with a new unit. This was good and Tomtom were good to deal.

Now we come to my problem now. I noticed that my GO 1050 wasn't charging, if you disconnected it from the car it would turn itself off. The unit was telling me the battery was flat. It wouldn't charge in the car or via the computer. So I contacted Tomtom about it and they said it would need to be sent into them. So remembering how Dick Smith handles repairs I decided to send it directly to Tomtom. So on the 2nd of April I went to my local post office and sent it off registered mail. After a couple of weeks not hearing from Tomtom I connected them, now this is where things went really wrong. They told me they had never received so I contacted Australia Post and asked for a P.O.D. for my parcel. They told me the parcel had been delivered to them on the 4th of April. So I contacted Tomtom and gave them the tracking number and a copy of the P.O.D. and said they needed to find my unit. They replied and said they have passed it on to another department to look into it. So a couple of days later I hadn't heard back from them so I emailed them and asked how it was going. I was told they needed my tracking number, again, in fact this went on three times with robot type of replies. It was like I was talking to a computer. The replies were non personal, robot like. So on Wednesday I told them they had until close of business Friday to find and fix my unit or else I was talking the matter much further.

Anyhow on Friday morning I received a call from a gentleman from Tomtom telling me he was going to fix the problem today. He also told me my GPS was there, it had always been there. He had no idea why they couldn't see it. He said he was going to get to the bottom of it and find out why this had happened. He was also going to send out a new unit, a GO 1050 Live world. This was a new model and better than the unit I had.

So,I'm now getting my Tomtom GPS back and will again be able not to get lost lol. They were upgrade it with new maps, maps not yet released to the public just yet. So even thou I've had this issue with Tomtom I must say I do like their GPS units. I just hope this unit doesn't play up and it will work for years to come. Just like my old ONE XL unit I had.

You got to love companies that just seem to not understand just how important it is to have good customer and after sales service is.

So until next time, be good.

Triple J's Hottest 100 For 2011

Todat Triple J played their Hottest 100. I decided to change the make and model and went for a D-links modem to replace my Netgear DM111 ADSL modem. What I thought would be an easy thing to do turned into a nightmare. It took me just over an hour to get the modem going so I could just look at websites. It turned out the modems inbuilt firewall was stopping my streaming server from working. I only found out it wasn't streaming when I tried to show someone last night and I couldn't connect. I was out at a meeting of my local rescue squad in which my a member of. I knew when I got back home I had my work cut out for me.

Anyhow on my return home I jumped onto the computer and started to look into why this modem was trying to make my life a living hell. I spent another hour or so on it and worked out this modem just will not talk to my Apple Airport Extreme correctly. The modem has has it's own router built in even thou it only has one Ethernet port on it and can only have one computer connected to it at one time. When I purchased the modem yesterday I saw this of the modem and thought it might be a good thing but boy was I wrong. So after the Australia Day holiday today I'm going to have to take the modem back to where I got it from, Dick Smiths, and exchange it for another make and model modem. Looks like I'll be sticking with a Netgear modem.

The only thing I would like to know is what's the difference between the Netgear DM111 which I have now and their newer model the DM111P? I'm now using a service called No IP, this will allow my radio stream to work without having a static IP address and thus saving me $10 per month. This new servcie was given to me from Telstra themselves to try and see if it will do what I need a static IP for. So I have reactived the stream with this new service and hopefully it will keep it on the air 24/7. Time will only tell if it works. it's a free service for a basic, single user. So like I said I'm hoping it will work and keep working.

There is still an on going fault at the Balranald exchange which Telstra is working on with their equipment supplier to fix ASAP. Lets hope they also tell us we now have ADSL2+. it would be silly for telstra to spend 10's a thousands a dollars upgrading and replacing equipment to fix the congestion problem we had here and not at the same time upgrade the ADSL equipment to ADSL2+. But I guess we are talking about Telstra here and we are just only country people. So we're not high on their list of customers to give faster internet speeds. Not in a money making area like the city people are. Anyhow can only hope and wish.

So please let me know if you have issues with the radio stream. Like all the products I've purchased, one of the things I hate the most is companies not updating their software or firmware for their products. One of this apps, which I loved using was iStat for iPhone. Since Apple released the iPhone 4 this app has not worked correctly and after contacting them many times and getting the same answer, "we're working on it" nothing happens. How bloody hard can it be to fix the problem and release an update? I'm now having the same issue with Netgear and their 3G wireless routers they sell in Australia. These router work with the phone carriers USB modems. Telstra last month publicly released their new 4G LTE network and are now only supplying these new USB modems to their customers. If your old one breaks down and you need it replaced Telstra will only supply you with one of their 4G modems. Now this is great if you plug the modem straight into your computer and don't want to share the connection with other devices like your iPhone or iPad. If you have a 3G router like Netgear's your out of luck, these new modems won't work. Now I hear you saying, well of course it won't work, the router is for 3G networks and not 4G. Well I ask this, how on earth is the router going to know what network the modem is working with? All that is needed is a firmware update so the router know how to connect. I connected Netgear about this and was told they have no plans to update this router to handle the new Telstra 4G modems. What the!!!! Telstra is the biggest telco in Australia and Netgear is saying, oh well we don't care about their customers. Very stupid in my mind. I now have a wireless router I can't use and now have an issue of sharing my connection with my other devices. NOT HAPPY.

Now talking about being not happy and poor service from software makers, I now start on the biggest company's that don't give a shit, FaceBook. The other month they released an updated app for the iPhone and with this update they brought support for the iPad. This is great news if the stupid app worked. This app has clearly not been tested enough, it fails to load, only half works and at times just doesn't load pages or allow you to scroll down. All these issues if it even loads without crashing. I have now deleted the app and gone back to using Safari for FaceBook.

I really HATE companies that show they don't give a shit about their customer/users. Its even worse when you have paid for the app. Lift your game people or else I will not use your products and I will tell others to do the same.
